Getting to Denali National Park
By car
You can drive there from either Anchorage or Fairbanks along Highway AK-3. This highway is also known as the George Parks Highway with 92 miles. Fairbanks is only about 2 hours away from the north of the park. But Anchorage is a bit further south, around 5 hours away. Furthermore, if you would prefer, you can hop on the Alaska Railroad and let them do the driving for you. Stats operates the rail. So it’s a super convenient way to get to Denali from either Anchorage or Fairbanks.
By train
There is a free train service that runs between Fairbanks and Anchorage, which is known as the Alaska Railroad. From Fairbanks, it is about 4 hours. You will enjoy the beautiful boreal forests and cross the Tanana River. Adult tickets start at just $85, which is a great deal. If you are leaving from Anchorage, the train ride is a bit longer, at around 8 hours. But it is a scenic and relaxing trip. You will wind through the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, taking in views of rivers, mountains, and maybe even some wildlife spotting. Adult fares start at $187, which is very reasonable for such a lovely adventure.
Nearest airport
If you’re planning a trip to the amazing Denali National Park and Preserve, you’ll be happy to know that there are a few airports conveniently located nearby. The closest one is the Healy River Airport (HKB), which is just 20 miles away from the center of the park. But this airport doesn’t offer commercial services. There is another option, which is the Fairbanks International Airport (FAI), which is a bit further out, around 120 miles from the park. But it’s still a good choice if you don’t mind a slightly longer drive. Anchorage International Airport (ANC) is also relatively close to Denali National Park and Preserve, so that’s another airport you could look into.
